All three of you who frequent this blog (ha ha) have read about my Harry Potter obsession post-bar exam...well, I have my very own Hogwarts acceptance letter coming in the mail!

I am sooo excited. I needed a mousepad for my office so I turned to my trusted Etsy (where I've been doing a lot of shopping lately :) ) and found this...a Hogwarts acceptance letter mousepad at iheartseverus, where you can find all things Harry Potter.

You could personalize it with your name and address that you'd like. Instead of "the cupboard under the stairs" mine will say "the office that smells like candy." That's because everyone who comes into my office says it smells like candy or vanilla. It's because I use this cotton candy fragrance oil from madcitysue at etsy. Hey, I'd rather my office smell like candy than the many alternatives out there. Wouldn't you agree?

On the jewelry front. I've had so many great experiences with my customers. I recently received a message from my customer who bought a necklace for her grandmother a while back...letting me know that she still loves her necklace and was wearing it when my customer visited her recently. I was so touched that she would take the time to share that with me. That is the greatest thing about selling your handmade products directly to your customers. There is a connection there that you don't get otherwise.

At the end of this past week a woman bought my Blue Dalmatian Ring and in her message to seller she noted that the ring reminded her of a dog she had that was white with bluish spots. Her dog passed away last year :( It breaks my heart to hear about people losing their pets but am so glad that every time she looks at the ring, it'll remind her of a dog she loved very much.

New Pieces!

I finally sat down and made some jewelry this weekend although I haven't listed them at my Etsy store yet. Writing the descriptions and measurements, is not my favorite part of selling jewelry so I tend to procrastinate.

I am still selling here and there and have received some great feedback. I had a man in Croatia buy one of my pearly mooon necklaces for his wife. He sent me a convo to let me know that she loved it. Makes me so happy! I also had a feedback from a customer who said one word "stunning." It really doesn't get any better than that. Thank you everyone for your great feedback and your support.

Sorry for taking so long between posts but as much as the law fascinates me, I'm sure none of you want to hear about my work. I did get my lawyer business cards today and although they're not anywhere near as awesome as my Moo cards, these ones make me feel so legit, ha ha.

It's Been Too Long

I am sorry for having disappeared on you but I'm so tired after work that the last thing I wanted to do was blab on my blog.

On the work front, I love where I work and was really lucky to get the job. I love being an attorney and working here was definitely worth the long wait for a job.

On the jewelry front, things are slowing down some. I'm still making sales here and there and and get the orders out pretty quickly. But I think not lurking around Etsy has resulted in less exposure and less people visiting the shop, and that's fine. What is eating at me though, is the fact that I bought some new stones and really want to make more pieces but am just too tired. Now, I know there are Etsy sellers out there who have a full time job, kids, and a successfull Etsy shop! How, they do it is beyond me. I like my sleep...so I guess, I'll just have to deal with occassional sales here and there.

But I'm not complaining, I am so happy with my day job that getting to make jewelry for the occassional order just makes me that much happier.

Why I Love Making Jewelry

There are the obvious things associated with crafting...it allows me to be creative, play with beads, use my hands, wack a hammer, and see a finished product that (I think) is beautiful.

But most of all I love making jewelry and selling it to other people because women have a special relationship with jewelry. It not only adorns you...it's the finishing touches to the woman you want to be on a particular day. And it makes me soooo happy to know that something I created makes a woman out there happy. When I get messages from buyers who say they chose my jewelry to wear on their wedding day because it is the perfect accent for their wedding dress, or because it's something they can wear again after the wedding, it makes me happy. And when I get new feedback from someone who just received their jewelry and LOVED it...there's no better feeling...eventhough I benefitted from it too :) That's why I love making jewelry.

The Experiment Is Over

Some time back I read a post in the Etsy forum that antiperspirants are packed with aluminum, which is bad for you, etc. So when my usual deodorant/anti-perspirant ran out, I searched Etsy for a natural and handmade alternative. I bought one and picked the "Monkey Fart" scent. It smells great, very fruity and tropical. I really wanted to love it but there were a couple of problems. 1. Upon application, it felt wet and slimy, and 2. Although it smells nice, it doesn't keep me from sweating. Granted I'm not a big sweater but there were definitely moments when I and my deodorant were tested (i.e. interview at the Public Defender's office) and the deodorant definitely failed. I may have failed too but I haven't heard from them yet...so for now...it was just my deodorant that failed. I am willing to sacrifice certain things to support handcrafters and to use more natural products...but smelling acceptable to society is not one of them.

I found out last week that I got a job at a law firm (yay) and my deodorant was not going to stand up to the test (boo). So it's back to my old faithful...Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Deodorant/Antiperspirant. I'll just have to live with the aluminum poisoning my body...oh well.

Please, before you yell at me for spending almost $20 on a designer deodorant, I must tell you it is THE BEST deodorant out there. It smells spectacular, keeps you dry all day, doesn't leave a white residue, and lasts FOREVER. It's embarrassing how long my last tube lasted me but just take my word for it. So there it is, my experiment with the natural deodorant is so over.

So yesterday was the Beading Challenge Deadline and I can post a picture of what I came up with! Here it is:

It was really fun to see what other people came up with and how many used similar concepts although noone saw eachother's results ahead of time. Just goes to show, there are only so many ways you could make earrings.

Now that I'm feeling better from my week of being out with the flu, I made a new necklace with a silver flower that my cousin sent me from Thailand. On the two sides are a beautiful faceted carnelian and a green glass bead. I named this one the blooming lotus necklace. It's so sweet and colorful, it's my new favorite.

Beading Challenge

I've been meaning to post about the beading challenge that I joined never got around to it. A couple of weeks ago, some etsy jewelry sellers (silverriverjewelry and designedbylucinda) posted a thread in the etsy forums asking for volunteers for a beading challenge. The challenge was to send each participant the same beads (graciously provided by santiamdesigns) and give everyone a week to finish a pair of earrings using those beads. The thought is that it would be interesting to see what different designs people come up with and how many people wind up having the same or similar designs despite never having seen eachother's work. We are to finish the earrings by March 24th and list the earrings in our etsy shop.

I got the beads last Friday and were so excited I sat down and made the earrings right away. These beads were soooooo small, a lot smaller than what I'm used to working with. Talk about a challenge! They kept falling out from between my stubby fingers and I wouldn't be able to find them! It took me FOREVER to finish the darn earrings but I really like them. I can't post the pictures of the earrings yet but here are the beads...what would you have done with them?

Wedding Season!!!

Spring is just around the corner and wedding season is fast approaching. Etsy has launched a wedding series and promoting it in internet ads and on Etsy itself. I am so flattered that they have included a picture of my pearly mooon necklace in their ad! I love it when I find out that an order is for a wedding and now with all this exposure, I may get more wedding orders and I couldn't be happier. Etsy's wedding series comes at the perfect time for me personally as well since I am FINALLY moving on the wedding planning. This'll be fun.

As I was perusing the forum threads on Etsy, I came across one that told us about Scoutie Girl, a website with great finds from various indie artists. Anyway...Scoutie Girl will allow you to put up a free banner advertising your shop if they like your stuff. I submitted a link to my etsy shop and just got word that they liked my jewelry and Jan, THE Scoutie Girl, asked me for a banner.

Ummm...a banner? Ok, I think I can figure out how to create one. So I opened up GIMP, a program kind of like photoshop, played around a little, got very frustrated, but finally made a banner! It's so exhilirating and satisfying to learn something new and face your fears. In my case...anything computer related.

Treasury

Last night, after creating my treasury I was peaking at others' treasuries as well. On Etsy, if you're logged in and look at the list of treasuries that people have created, you'll see a yellow star next to the title if an item from your store is in that treasury. I saw a yellow star next to a treasury created by decrochetivetouch, a seller on etsy who makes really cute crochet accessories. I was so excited and was greeted by a page of beautiful blues when I clicked on it. She was kind enough to add my Blue Estrella necklace (the turquoise one with wood beads). I think it's so front page worthy, don't you?

For anyone out there who's technologically challenged like I am, thumbalizr has been a great tool to save a whole webpage instead of just the portion that shows on your screen like print screen does. Here how it works.

1. copy the url of the page that you want to copy.
2. go to http://www.thumbalizr.com
3. paste the link in the box next to where it says "url."
4. click either "screen" or "page" to determine if you only want to save just the screen like print screen, or the whole page.
5. click "thumb it" - you'll see pictures of stars snapping their fingers and something in german as you wait.
6. after the page comes up on the right, click the size that you want to download it in...I usually pick 1024.
7. when the window opens up, right click on the picture, click "save as" and save it where ever you want.

That looks a lot longer than than it really is...hope that helps, but then again, maybe I'm the only person in this world who didn't know how to do this until recently.

My OXY LOVE Treasury

Here's a treasury I created based on a black and orange theme for the colors of my alma mater, Occidental College. For those who don't know, Barak Obama did a stint at Oxy for a year or so before heading to Columbia where he graduated. I love Oxy, it's helped nurture my intellectual curiosity and cemented the values that I have today.

Recycled Packaging

Ever since discovering Etsy, I've been doing A LOT of online shopping, which means that I get a lot of bubbled mailers, bubble wrap, and tissue paper. I hate throwing things out so I save them all and reuse them when I mail out my jewelry orders. I didn't want my customers to think that I'm too cheap to buy envelopes and usually write "recycled packaging" on the back of the envelope. As I was browsing the Etsy forum, I happened upon a thread where roughstock was kind enough to share her recycled packaging artwork for free. I downloaded the artwork and ordered a custom stamp made from terbearco, a fellow Etsian. Terbear was so accomodating, made the stamp bigger per my request and sent a couple little recycle stampes free. I was so happy to received it and promptly stamped every available surface in my studio/office. Isn't it awesome?

Fierce Necklace

I love the ethnic look and feel of this necklace. The carnelians are colorful and really compliment the coconut shell half moon beads. The interlocking half moon kind of looks like fangs doesn't it? Pay It Forward

I did my first PIF (pay it forward) on Etsy today. I've seen others on Etsy do it and thought it was a good way to create some good Karma and pass cheer on to someone else. I listed these lavender pearl earrings for $0.20 + shipping. Pretty good deal huh? If you're interested, click here.

What else did I do today? I mailed out a large order (for me) today and I'm really excited for my customer to receive it. I hope she likes it. I also added a few of my new moo cards to the order. Augh, I wish I could show you my cute new moo business cards that I got in the mail yesterday. Unfortunately, Michael took the camera with him so pictures will have to wait.

Today, I also made a necklace with some really awesomely fun half moon beads made from coconut shells that my cousin sent me from Thailand. Augh, there we go...no camera.

Oooh, here's a pic from our trip to Big Bear last weekend. Michael, his best friend and his wife, and I rented a cabin for Valentine's Day weekend up in Big Bear (about an hour and a half from our house). It was beautiful. We took our dogs up with us, hung out by the fire in the cabin, cooked dinners, went horseback riding and just enjoyed the beauty of the mountains and snow. We really are blessed to live in such a great part of the world. The ocean, the desert, the mountains, Mexico...everything is just a hop, skip, and a car ride away.

Bowling. I was numero uno, the bowling champion in our first game but tanked the next two.

Horseback riding. It was absolutely gorgeous outside. Michael's on my right but I cut him out of the picture in case he didn't want his face plastered all over the internet :) His horse's name was Eeyore... one of my absolute favorite Pooh charactes. My horse's name was Flint and he was such a slow poke, which was fine by me. But he was so smart and instead of just blindly following the horses in front of him, he'd take short cuts and did everything he could not to step in the mud. That's my boy.

Wholesale

Yay, I completed my first wholesale order. I mentioned earlier that these two ladies Kathy & Shirley are opening up a boutique in PA and they ordered 6 of my lariats and a couple of matching earrings to sell in their shop when it opens next month. Woo hoo. I mailed the package out on Thursday and they're happy. It means to world to me to know that people like what I made and are happy with their purchase. Here's what they said...

Everything is perfect, nice work.

The Real O.C.

Last week, two very sweet ladies who are opening up a boutique in Pennsylvania contacted me about a wholesale order (which I'm very excited about) and in one of our many messages back and forth...one of them said this: "By the way...don't know if you watch the housewives of Orange County but we do, is that how it really is there? :)"

I thought it was the cutest question and decided to share today's perfect Orange County day.

As a little background, Orange County and I have a love-hate relationship. I grew up in Thailand and would not have wound up in Orange County had it not been for the decisions of a man I call Uncle Sam (not the U.S. gov). It's funny how our lives are often so dependent upon other people's choices. Anyway, to make a long story short, after Vietnan, Uncle Sam who over the years became my father's best friend, moved back to the States. He made a stop in Orange County to visit a friend on his way down to San Diego. Well, Uncle Sam never made it down to San Diego. So when my father died, and it was time for my brother and I to head across the big Pacific Blue to continue our education and such, we headed here to Orange County to live with Uncle Sam.

Any of my highschool friends would tell you that aside from the beach, I hated Orange County. I missed the dirt, grit, grime and chaos of Bangkok (probably why I love NYC so much). I always wanted out. But every time I went away...I longed for the sunshine, the laid back vibe, and the general happiness of the people that live here. So I always came back and now I'm here to stay...I think. Well, the answer to that one's up to Michael.

I've been cooped up in the house with my nose in the Harry Potter books for weeks, punctuated by moments where I was looking for a job. I finally finished the last book last night (sigh...I will miss you guys) and am free once again, to go out and remind myself of why I love Orange County.

Today was one of those perfect days where the sky was a bright blue without a single cloud in the sky. It's early February yet it was 80 degrees today (not to rub it in or anything).

Do you see my dedication? I'm going about 70 mph and still made the effort to show you what the temperature is outside my car.

Remembering Fall

Introducing the necklace version of my leaf lariats. The lariats were very popular and flew off the shelves very quickly. I still have a couple of beautiful leaves left but they're bigger than the other ones and look much better on a necklace than a lariat (trust me). This is a real leaf preserved in 99% silver and is accented by a copper color freshwater pearl. The leaf and pearl hang from a delicate but strong sterling silver chain.

Things have been slow on etsy this week so I've been sketching and brainstorming new pieces. I'll post pictures as they come into fruition. Hope your Thursday's going well. My affair with Harry Potter and the gang continues. I'm on book 7 and boy do I love this lot.

Introducing My Earrings Model

I'm not sure if it's a he or a she...but I think (s)he makes a great model. Is not a prima donna, doesn't need to eat or take bathroom breaks, and works for love.

Some people will probably think it's weird to use a teddy bear to model earrings but it's a lot more sanitary than putting the earrings on a person. Plus, you won't "get" these earrings unless you saw them on. So this was my solution.

What to get my man for Valentine's???

Here's an idea...handmade cufflinks! Granted, not every man wears shirts that require cufflinks but if yours does, it's a slam dunk gift they'll use. They won't be sitting with the pile of gifts you got him that he never touched.

Thanks to a client who asked if I could make cufflinks, it forced me to find a way. i was apprehensive at first but it really wasn't hard at all. I'm quite happy with how these turned out.

This is only a sample one made from practice wire so the real ones will be much shinier and made from sterling silver. The stone is a faceted jasper, which are very unique stones. Although it's hard to find two jaspers that are alike, I have some that are pretty similar and go together well as a pair.

Many New Things Coming

So my brother's back from Thailand and he came bearing gifts from my cousin. She went above and beyond her call of cousinly love and sent me so many awesome beads and charms. There were glass beads, sterling silver charms, wood beads, even some made from coconut shells! I couldn't wait to dig in so I made a ring today with this beautiful blue and white glass bead.

On another very exciting note, I was given a challenge by a client to make an accessory for the men. I won't say what it is yet but I'm excited to branch out and will post pictures as soon as I'm done.

I'm still really enjoying making my pieces of jewelry but I am also stepping up on my attorney job search. It's going, albeit slowly.

Good Saturday

The weather was absolutely gorgeous yesterday, mid 60's bright blue skies with puffy cotton white clouds. My favorite kind of day.

I finished book 4 of Harry Potter in the morning and it was every bit as riveting as I had hoped. While reading the book I thought "gosh the people who made the movie did a great job interpreting the book, even some of the smallest details." There were differences of course but you wouldn't have been disappointed if you read the book then saw the movie. I had seen the Goblet of Fire before reading the book, and even then, there was still so much in the book that it kept my attention and I was not bored for a minute. I started book 5 last night and like everyone says, it is much darker.

I finally bought some practice wire and found the inspiration to make a mock up of the bridal headband I've been talking about. In my biased opinion, it's beautiful :) I hope my customer likes it and I look forward to making the real thing in sterling silver. I'm itching to post pictures but I'd rather wait until I have the finished product to show you.

So that's the update...thought I'd show my blog some love.

Harry Potter Obsession

It's been a few days since I've updated my blog but it's because not much has happened. I was sucked in and absorbed by Harry Potter's world of wizardry and Hogwarts. It's unstoppable. I read books 1 and 2 years ago and picked up book 3 while at a cabin in big bear. Had to finish that book and now I'm almost done with book 4. Never knew that I could read 800 pages in two days. If only I were this productive in law school (ha ha). It never ceases to amaze me how some people have the creativity and talent to create a whole world of characters and events out of thin air. J.K. Rowling does a wonderful job with character development and tying the story together. Her stories made to laugh, cry, and develop knots in my stomach - wishing I could read faster because I need to know how Harry is going to get out of this one. I'm usually pretty good about picking up on clues and guessing the outcome of stories but she just blew me away. How oh how does she do it?

Any Harry Potter junkies out there...drop me a note. I know you're out there.

I think a piece of jewelry in tribute to Harry Potter is called for. I'll try to work on that this weekend. It's time to get back in the office/studio.

I am Not Powerless...

...Against that acne that is making its way to the surface to deface my beautiful (sometimes) face.

This is a little off the jewelry topic but I really wanted to share this. I finally found a blemish stick that really does work! The Burt's Bees Blemish Stick is amazing. When you see that evil white spot sneaking up on your face, go ahead and dab some of this formula on it a few times a day and it will usually be gone by tomorrow. I had a particularly stubborn one and it took two days. But believe me, it dries right up. It is 99% natural and has a pretty strong smell of tea tree and fennel (I hate the smell of fennel, reminds me of when I had way too many at an Indian restaurant when I was a kid because I thought they were so awesome that I got really sick). The smell is definitely tolerable and disappears quickly.

Ok, now that we've established that I'm acne free, we can move on to the jewelry. I did make a sale although the week was generally slow. I got my materials for the bridal headband and will get a crack at it after a dry run on some craft wire. It needs to be perfect. My dear cousin in Thailand also bought me a lot of beads and I can't wait to get my hands on them when my brother gets back this weekend. Oh, my dear new beads, I love you already.

Here's a picture of my new happy Saturday Morning Ring. The flower is a carved piece of rose quartz and the leaf is made of peridot on a sterling silver wire. It's girly, it's happy, it's me.

Clusters

I played around a little with a pendant frame that I had and came up with this fun and sparkly Scarlet Cluster. It's made with diamond cut sterling silver beads and small garnet beads wire wrapped onto the pendant frame. This one's perfect for Valentine's day or anyone out there who loves this deep red color.

Garnet is also the January birthstone.

It's been a great week

This week has been so wonderful and I hope to keep the momentum going.

I told you about my pearly moon necklaces going to a wedding in Canada. Well, right after that I had another order for pearly moon necklaces and matching earrings for a wedding in Alaska. This lady is very sweet and we've been exchanging a lot of e-mails because she also wanted me to make a custom headband. We looked for a plain headband in the style she wanted but couldn't find one. Then it came to me that I I could probably make the headband myself with wire. I'm waiting for supplies and will post pictures of the finished product when it's done. It's going to be beautiful.

I also made a couple of other sales on Etsy and a necklace to my hairdresser, as well.

Maybe next week will be as exciting?

Global Warming Never Looked So Beautiful

This picture was from a New York Times article on the melting ice sheets in Greenland. The stream of water in the picture is an example of melted ice water, which may be contributing to greater erosion of the ice sheets. This could possibly lead to a greater rise in water levels than scientists had predicted. Anyway...I just thought, this picture of doom was just too beautiful.

I'm going to Canada

Well, I'm not going to Canada...but two of my pearly moon necklaces are heading north to adorn a couple of bridesmaids at a wedding in Canada. I am so excited and honored to know that someone has chosen my jewelry to be a part of their special day. Just think of it...every time they look at their wedding pictures...those little gems will be in it. Makes me happy.

It also reminds me that I need to get going on my own wedding :)

It's My Birthday...

...and I'll do nothing if I want to. Well, I was hoping for a trip to the museum, maybe the Getty or MOCA in LA. But I had to give Duke a bath and it's 2:34 now and I still have a mountain pile of laundry from our trip to do before I can leave. Plus I'm sick...so it's looking to be a very Happy 29th for me. It's ok, I'll make it up this weekend when I'm feeling better.

I want to send out a "thank you" to my parents who gave me life and the kind of opportunities that many don't have, to my brother for his support and love, to the Haycrafts for being my wonderful surrogate family, and to the Parises for making me feel like family. Last but not least, Michael for your love, patience and understanding. I am undeservedly lucky.

Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2008 fills your life with love, laughter and adventure.

Sorry for disappearing for a while but I was really busy doing Christmas shopping and wrapping gifts that I neglected my blog. We did a white elephant exchange (with nice gifts) at my brother's on Christmas eve and had a wonderful time playing Nintendo Wii. The person who got my gift...a fondue set...didn't really want it so I did him a favor and stole it from him. Fondue party anyone? As for the Wii part of the party, do you ever watch grown people playing wii without looking at the screen. It's great entertainment seeing people flailing their arms in the air, moving around in random patterns and squealing for no apparent reason...I love it.

I am sick on New Year's eve but I am resting up today so that I can really celebrate tonight. I have high hopes for 2008 and am sending out good energy to everyone.

On the jewelry side...here are some new pieces.

Pebbles Necklace:

This necklace is made with African Yellow Turquoise and volcanic lava rocks. I named it the pebbles necklace because the colors remind me of Pebble Flintstone's outfit. I made it asymetrical with the yellow turquoise on one side. Michael says it bugs him but since I made it...I can do what I want (ha ha).

Pink Lemonade Lariat

I love the refreshingly pink Chilean Cherry Quartz that hangs from this lariat. It's a little splash of color for any winter wardrobe.

Lastly...A very Grown Up Necklace

This necklace took me a really long time to design and make. I hand-hammered the sterling silver circle and wrapped it with sterling silver wire. Then I cut smalle sections of sterling silver chain and connected them to the beads, alternating between white freshwater pearls and vintage black wood beads. It's beautiful and classy. It sold right away at the Christmas boutique at Michael's nieces' school. I will have to make another one when I have the time.

Lariats

As promised...I'm starting to post pics of some of the pieces I frantically made for the craft show. Here are a couple of lariats that I really liked.

Autumn Leaf Lariat

I love this lariat. The leaf is a real leaf that was preserved in 99% silver! I thought that made the piece quite unique. I added some freshwater pearls in autumn colors to it. Love it. People are worried about how delicate the chain is but it's amazing how strong it is. I used that chain in a couple of necklaces that I made for myself and have slept with them on...no problem.

The picture just doesn't do this piece justice. The stones are Brazilian Brown Quartz and they're just beautiful in person.

A couple more rings

Evil Eye Ring:

This is a modern evil eye made from a green freshwater pearl measuring 10mm, wrapped in sterling silver wire. For more pictures, click here.

Chocolate Mint Ring:

This is another one of my swirl rings with a Peruvian Turquoise at the center. I love this minty blue-green color with the chocolate brown lines running through it. It really cheers you up.

Flop

Hi everyone...well, I did my first REAL craft show and it was a total flop. I stayed up all night making some really pretty jewelry, had 3 hours of sleep and headed to the craft show at La Habra High School. It was organized by the school's MBA program (Marketing and Business something) and the kids did an amazing job of setting up, they were extremely helpful BUT they didn't advertise enough and there were probably 20 people there all day...none of whom bought my jewelry.

BUT I had a great time (minus the lack of sleep part). I met many other etsy sellers and got to check out everyone's stores. There were so many things I wanted to buy there and really wanted to make a sale so I could go shopping :) I did some shopping anyway...bought a super soft printed cotton t-shirt from spike designs and an extremely yummy smelling apple blossom candle from ravenx and lusted after some beautifully simple and clean jewelry by chocolate and steel. I met many people, learned a lot about displays and setting up, and if I ever decide to do another craft show...I'm sure I'll make some sales.

Oh well, you live and learn.

Another Happy Recipient

Nhu-Chi, my brother's girlfriend is a great supporter of my crafting habit and has bought many pieces as gifts for her friends' b'days. Here's a picture of Liz with her citrine ring and matching citrine and freshwater pearl necklace. It makes me so happy to know that people like their gifts, especially when the gift is my jewelry :)

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas

I loved Christmas when I was younger. Although Christmas in Bangkokg didn't really feel like Christmas, we made it feel as Christmassy as possible. My brother and I would spray white foam on our windows so that it'd look like snow, even if it was 95 degrees out. We had our fake tree and drove my mother crazy singing Christmas carols in the car. It was so special.

I lost that feeling that Christmas was magical. But last night, I felt some of that magic coming back. Michael suggested we go down the street to pick out a Christmas tree, "we'll just get a small one this year." He says that every year but when he got to the lot, he looked at a few smaller ones then headed straight to the giant ones (well, giant to me). I think there's a little of a Christmas lover in him :) It was cold last night and that first whiff of pine when I stepped out of the car made my heart leap and put a smile on my face. We finally picked a tree after about half an hour walking back and forth from tree to tree.

We decorated the tree while singing along to Christmas carols playing on the radio. It was magical. We saved some nonbreakable ornaments for his neices to decorate the tree tonight.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Little Girls Deserve Pretty Jewelry Too

In an effort to *induce* good behavior from Michael's neices a few weeks ago, I let each of them pick a bead and made a ring for each one. They get to take the rings home on the condition that they are on good behavior the whole time they were visiting. Worked like a charm.

The rings were so cute that I decided to make more children's rings and thought they'd be great for my jewelry sale at their preschool this week. Here they are.

These little rings have a glass moon bead and a little round colored bead representing the sun. These candy colored rings would be perfect for any little girl.

This is a smaller version of my loop ring.

You Can Do It Yourself!

Sorry I've been gone for a while but the food coma lasted a little longer than expected.

So here's a little synopsis of Thanksgiving. Two families, two turkeys, two stuffings, two cranberries sauces, two fruit salads and one refrigerator door that fell off. YES, you read it correctly, the refrigerator door FELL OFF. You know, the usual thanksgiving excitement. But we had a wonderful time.

But the day before Thanksgiving was my proudest moment. The white seats of our dining room set really needed a cleaning but we didn't get around to it in time and the thought of having Thanksgiving with white dining room seats just didn't sound like a good idea. So Michael thought we should get seat covers. Well, Allison, whose Mom is way cooler than Martha Stewart suggested reupholstering the cushions myself. She showed me which screws to unscrew and where to staple the material on and off I went.

Got some great microfiber fabric in dark brown from Big Y Yardage in Orange. Got a staple gun and excitedly got started. It took me two hours and the corners took some maneuvering but I think it turned out very well..."how do they look?"

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it truly is all about the family. There's no stress about getting gifts for everyone and really is about enjoying each other's company around a table full of food. And Thanksgiving food is the best. It's a perfect combination of every flavor, meaty, sweet, sour, salty. As Rachel Ray would say "savory and sweet...yummo."

This is the first Thanksgiving in three years where I can do my shopping ahead of time, prepare the food and the house for the festivities without that nagging feeling that I really should be studying. For once, I can really enjoy my food coma.

I made the cranberry sauce tonight: cranberries, brown sugar (lots), mandarin oranges, some OJ, and some minced red onions. Yum.

Turko is defrosting. Everything is going well.

On the jewelry note, here's a piece I made today called "Stone, Metal, Fire." Sounds so dramatic.

Stone: African Turquoise Briolette

Metal: Sterling silver wire wrapped around the stone + 2 beads on one side. I decided to make it asymetrical for a touch of surprise and whimsy.

Fire: Volcanic lava rock beads. They're dark and dramatic. A perfect contract for the bright, yellow stone.

I PASSED THE BAR EXAM!!!

Which means that I don't have to study for the February bar and can continue on this great venture making jewelry. I enjoy making every piece and would've been really bummed if I had to stop and take another 2 1/2 months off to study for the bar.

I couldn't have done any of this (law school, the bar, jewelry making) without the love, support, and encouragement of my fiance, Michael, my family and friends.

My brother Greg and his girlfriend Nhu-Chi wanted a necklace and earrings that would be perfect as a birthday gift for their friend Somany. I knew Somany is an artistic and fashionable girl so I created this necklace made with lava rock beads and three peruvian turquoise beads in the front. The earrings are made of lava beads and sterling silver.

I can't really take much credit for this one but I found this glass lampwork focal bead and just had to put it on a dainty sterling silver chain. Stones Stones Stones

Since I joined Etsy I've met a whole community of extremely talented hand crafters. I will try to feature my favorite sellers as I come across them. My first is Tamarasherbes. I met her on a forum thread discussing acne problems so I contacted her. Tamara makes all natural skin products from herbs and although she hasn't had formal training, her knowledge is vast and she's so willing to help. I ordered a face toner, face mask and jasmine solid perfume from her. It's not here yet but I can't wait to try it and judging from the feedback from her products, I know it'll be great.

Mystery Bracelet

This chunky bracelet has a mysterious air about it. The clay focal bead is decades old. The rest of the bracelet is made with faceted red coral and faceted black wood beads. A spiral toggle clasp finishes the bracelet off.

Measurement: 7.5 inches long
Adjustments: I will gladly adjust the length to fit you. If you would like a different toggle clasp, let me know and I'll do my very best.

Bindhi Necklace

The bindi is a small mark applied to the 6th chakra, aka the agna chakra. In Hindu tradition, the agna -"control"- chakra is the center of one's latent wisdom. I find the bindhi particularly beautiful and exotic. I still have some that my friend Amita gave me. This necklace reminds me of the symbolism and beauty of the bindhi.

It is made with amber decorated with hammered silver wire swirls on a string of wood beads. The necklace is 16 1/4 inches long and the amber itself if 2 inches long. This is a flat piece of amber and the back side is plain with no silver swirl so you could always flip it for a more simple look. I will gladly change the size or the clasp to your liking, just ask.

I delivered the Kara necklace (see below) today and had a wonderful dinner and chat with Kara. She made the necklace look oh so pretty. Cloudy Days

I love clouds and cloudy days make my happy. It's a little odd but I think it's because growing up in Thailand it was soooo hot that cloudy and rainy days give you a respite from the heat. These chalcedony earrings remind me of a cool and cloudy day. There's a little white in the bluish-gray stone that look like clouds.

Something Purple - Sunset Necklace

One of my favorite professors wished I had something in purple...well, here it is. It's not all purple but it'll do :) The purple and amber colored glass beads remind me of the sunsets behind my house. It's vibrant, warm, and sparkles. The necklace has a handmade and hammered sterling silver clasp. It measures 18 inches but I would gladly shorten or lengthen it, just e-mail me.

Amber 2 Necklace

There was much love for Amber and since Amber was not for sale, I searched for her substitute. I finally found some reasonably priced amber, I got some in this dark color and some larger tear-drop shaped ones in a lighter goldish color. This necklace is made with a flat oval amber bead and dark brown wooden beads, finished with a toggle clasp. I'll put pictures of the other amber piece up as soon as I can.

Hoops

My first pair of hoop earrings and I LOVE them. I loved making them and I love their perfect imperfections.

The hoops measure 1.25 inches from top to bottom (1.5 with the pearls) and are made with sterling silver wire which I hammered and pounded with great delight. 3 light green fresh water pearls dance at the bottoms of the hoops. The green and silver colors compliment each other so perfectly. Great for work or with jeans.

Kara Necklace - Custom Order

Although Amber isn't for sale, I had two orders for Amber's sister. I found some Amber pieces for a very reasonable price and am awaiting their delivery. Can't wait to get my hands on them.

I also had an order for a cousin of Big Red's a Big Red necklace. Got the coral in yesterday and am excited to get started.

My friend Olive also needs a necklace for a wedding and we're trying to come up with a beautiful necklace to compliment her dress and slinky silver shoes.

BOLD, Beautiful

Three coral pieces accented with Thai sterling silver beads are at the center of this very earthy necklace. The rest of the necklace is made with turquoise that I bought in Arizona. It's perfect for a day when you're feeling bold and beautiful.

I thought it was a good idea and decided to start one of my own. Now that I'm done with law school, the bar exam, and I haven't gotten a job yet, what better way is there to spend my time than make jewelry.

So here are a few pieces I have. I will be making more and should have some cool rings coming after I take a wired ring making class. I'm so excited.
